I finally finished a series of pages in my Butterfly Journal Two. It is taking way longer than I thought to fill up and finish the book. I think out of the six panels in this fold-out piece, the Friends are Family Tea Party is the best one. It is based on a Suzi Blu piece - here is a link to the December 2015 Suzi Blu Gypsy Boho A-GO-GO Show. You can see her Tea Party piece at the beginning. In this episode she talks about how friends are the family you choose. Because I am a Suzi Patreon supporter, I was able to download the video where she showed the making of the Tea Party painting step by step. This is what I came up with for my Tea Party:
This is a six-panel foldout. I glued two pieces of Stonehenge onto each end, so it's like a foldout book. The two outer pages have a Princess copy (I wanted to practice colored pencil layering) and I found the Disney Cinderella image online from an old book I used to have!
When opened, here is the inside:
On the left panel, I glued in the photo of me - it might be an old Polaroid? Not sure if it's specifically Polaroid film, but it was the photos you had to peel off the wrapper before it would expose.
This is the original photo, scanned:
This is the original pencil drawing of the Princess, with heavy colored pencil layering:
There is a lot of colored pencil built up on her face, and I don't like the waxy surface. Ugh. It's just pushing wax around. Suzi likes that, but I do not.
The right side foldout piece (reverse of the Princess copy) is a drawing of Child Me, with just a little bit of colored pencil layering. I still don't like waxy colored pencil, but this small amount is better.
The childhood theme came from the grieving as I described in this December blog post. I came up with some ideas, and even started a blog post draft which languished until I deleted it. I figured I would explain what I did when I was done, but as usual this is taking way longer than I thought it would take. I fashioned a paper doll pattern, and traced it onto drawing paper and sketched out a stack of figures, having to do with Childhood Dreams: Star Wars, Princess, ballerina, up to college when I wanted to go to New York. I worked on the drawings in January and glued the figures into the Butterfly Two Journal. And I'm working through them slowly. So this will take several blog posts to show everything I've done, especially since I'm not finished yet!
Suzi Blu brought back Paint & Chronicle for 2016, but she's calling it Paint, Plan & Chronicle. I bought a planner, but all I do is a daily 'log book' of sorts (I got that idea from Austin Kleon). I glued in some Stonehenge and intended to do some art journaling, but haven't done anything at all. Not even a monthly wrap up - I just got January started, and it's already nearing the end of February. Time just gets away from me. More to come. Eventually.
